Do Vehicle Graphics Damage the Paintwork?

The short answer is no, the long answer is below!

Original paintwork is the best blank canvas

Vehicle wraps and graphics are most effective when applied to the original factory paintwork, as removing vinyl decals from re-sprayed panels can result in some peeling, depending on the quality of the paint and how it was applied.

It’s all about the prep

The key to a great vehicle graphics application is careful planning and preparation. This means your car or van should be in great condition, with no rust or peeling paint, before starting the process. You should also clean it really well to get rid of any dust or grease that could stop the self-adhesive vinyl from sticking properly. If you follow these guidelines, your graphics should not damage the paintwork upon removal.

Sun fading

Vehicle wraps actually act as a protective layer, preventing stone chips and other signs of wear and tear from damaging the paintwork underneath. However, this does mean that any sections of the vehicle left uncovered may appear more faded once the graphics are removed, as they’ve been exposed to the sun while the wrapped panels haven’t. So, if you’ve got cut vinyl lettering or small decals, rather than a partial or full wrap, you should expect some light shadows (sometimes called “ghosting”) to be left behind when these graphics are removed.
